Hi, I am not Erwan, but I have done some experimentation with jpeg2000. There are really millions of ways to make a valid jpeg2000 file (even the baseline .jp2 file, not to mention the more featured .jpx format). All standard complient clients should open all baseline 'flavours' but unfortunately it is not always the case. An all too many software handle jpeg200 in very ineffective way. They for example try to decompress the image to some own memory or file structure instead of reading streams directly from jpeg2000 files. It may work fine with digital camera files but not with multi-gigabyte geospatial imagery. Jpeg2000 can be extremely fast to use and there is no need to accept slow solutions. Slowness is not due to jpeg2000 but poor implementation.
If you have geospatial imagery in mind, I would recommend to test mainly with big enough images, 10000 by 10000 pixels could be a minimum. ER Mapper compressor creates pretty good geospatial jpeg2000 files but you can use other tools as well. Jpeg2000 is, after all, a standard, even it really seems to be much easier to handle format like ER Mapper ECW that is always the same. What I believe is important with geospatial jpeg2000 is that the progression order should be RPCL of PCRL. Then there should be precincts in the image, and enough resolution levels. -Jukka- > -----Alkuperäinen viesti----- > Lähettäjä: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Puolesta Paul Austin > Lähetetty: 27. syyskuuta 2007 19:03 > Vastaanottaja: List for discussion of JPP development and use. > Aihe: Re: [JPP-Devel] Image Framework In OpenJUMP > > Hi Erwan, > > Have you done any experimentation with Jpeg2000, I tried some > experiments with imagemagik on linux and found that it's > difficult to get it to work with the many different flavours > of Jpeg200.
