Uwe, You asked what log4J is good for. Programmers use it to make writing log messages from their source code easier. Programmers may do this to report errors, or to find problems.
For example, I sued Log4J to determine that OpenJUMP is passed String objects to trigger the rendering of special items, like the grid or selected features. I hope this makes sense.
