Paolo,

At the high level I agree with keeping the imagery stuff as a plugin, but
currently adding a renderer as a plugin can be a challenge (hence why is was
placed in the core this time around).

I guess we should look into pluggable renderers in the future (wms is another
example).

Subject: R: [jump-users] integrating the JUMP imagery framwork?

Hi all, here're my two cents.

.) I can't see any problem with using JAI. It has distributions
for Windows and Linux (and maybe others) that uses accelerated
hardware if available, so it would be crazy not to use it.
If JAI can't, for any reason, use the binary natives,
it trasparently falls back to pure Java.

.) The imagery support, whatever it is, should definetely be a plugin.
This should be true for _any_ functionality. I can't see no reason why
anything should be inside the Core. There's already two much inside it,
that should be moved outside. If the Core should be modified somehow
to support the presence of the imagery stuff, OK, let's do it.
Probably if the imagery plugin needs something from the Core it would be
something that may be of use to other plugins as well.

.) If the imagery stuff is a plugin, it can be the JUMP one, or the one
from Pirol, or any other one. Since it's pluggable, users will choose
the one they find better for their own needs.
Anyway I feel that, since integration with JUMP and Vivid Solutions
is _very_ important, any needed effort should be taken to ensure the
JUMP imagery stuff works with OpenJUMP as well.

.) About the Java 1.4 vs 1.5 dilemma, I think that anyone should switch
to 1.5 as soon as possible but at the same time we should not assume
everybody did it. So we should avoid any Java construct added in 1.5
and not available in 1.4. It shouldn't be difficult. There's no such things
in 1.5 that you really can't live without...

Bye
Paolo Rizzi
