Stefan, My greatgrandfather was German. In fact, it was many years before I realized his first name wasn't really "Opa" but "Ernest". He had a very strong personality!
I am not offended at all by what you wrote. Some of your criticisms are very accurate. I do tend to have a wondering eye, and would benefit from more focus. I thank you for your honesty, and don't want to frustrate you or the other developers. Let me respond to some of your comments inline. :] You wrote: "fine.. but could you actually tell me, what currently is not accurate in the drawing tools and CursorTools?" I suppose the tools are handy enough for most GIS tasks. Especially for editing existing data. I am working on some tools that will allow for more precise editing, and more importantly, creation of feature geometries. For example, I don't believe there is currently an easy way to draw a line from the midpoint of the segment of one polygon boundary to the midpoint of another polygon boundary segment. this is just one example. You can find more details about my work on the CursorTools on my blog. http://openjump.blogspot.com/ Look for the "Refactoring OpenJUMP's CursorTools" post. You wrote: "fine as well.. I know we need write access for the datastore.. but reading is already a lot. And write access to sensitive data is ususally something ony needed by 2/10 gis people.. doing updates to geodata And there are other ways of importing data into a database. I rather see here OJ as complement for endusers and not data creators. And if somebody needs a better system he will invest some money into this, because he can "sell" the data (they are actually the most expensive part in an SDI). You may also remember that Paolo did some work on that - posted like 2 days ago. Further.. if you want to implement the stuff you need a testbed.. it takes lots of time while i do not see the full gain of it comparing to the stuff done by Uwe (PostGIs read and write), VividSolutions (PostGIs read), Larry (ArcSDE read) and Paolo (PostGIS and Oracle read and write(?))" Mmmmmm. I think this is why you and I look at OpenJUMP a little differently, and have some different priorities. I see value in OpenJUMP mainly as a tool to create geospatial data, and I think it has a lot of potential in this area. But you are correct, most GIS users are not interested in this specific area. You have to remember though, my day job is as a land surveyor. That means I'm in the business of creating spatial data. :] Besides, I think that precision drawing tools will set OJ ahead of the pack. I'm not really coding PostGIS support from the ground up. I'm actually retooling some of the code from the original PostGIS plug-in. This is not something I was particularly interested in myself. I was hired to do it, and the person paying the bill has some specific things he wants to have changed/added to OJ's PostGIS support. You wrote: "* you proposed me to document on the functionality of OJ - not yet touched in current Tutorial/ UserGuides * you proposed as well to have a look on the english of Uwe's Tutorial" Yes I did. Thanks for reminding me of that. I tell you what. I won't touch anymore of the Developer's guide until I get those two things scratched off my task list. :] You wrote: "of course you need to understand "some" things .. but not all. Only the things necessary to solve a problem. But i feel a couple of times like you try to re-invent the wheel... and even the wheel of working stuff." Not re-invent the wheel, just improve the ride of the chariot. :] You wrote: "basically the point is for me, that We have a HUGE bunch of: - bugs (see at soucreforge) => note: you learn the code also by bugfixing - undocumented functionality in OJs nighty built - missing functionallity which should be part of a full GIS and there is nobody touching that, because there are not so many persons." I agree with you on all 3 points. I just don't agree with you completely on what falls in the last category. (Missing functionality...) You wrote: "i know that i wrote above not very nice and it sounds frustrated- but these days i had the feeling I need to say it - because of all the posts you do in which you propose to do this and that... but the current effective output... so please just concentrate on ONE thing" Ouch. Actually, I've put the documentation template and the temporary linux distribution of OJ on the SurveyOS site. You'll also find some of the code for my work on the CursorTools. I hope to have my code for the PostGIS plug-in and DataSource Catalog there soon. So I do have a little output. :] You wrote: "Actually: please make a todo list for you and us on the your BLOG or WIKI..." Done. Check the last post on my blog. You wrote: "(actually i have not yet understood why your additional wiki).. " Becuase it is neater, more organized, and doesn't have as much downtime. You wrote: "so take it professional, and not personal" Always. As I said before, some of your criticism is merited. I will make an effort to be more focused, and more productive. Please be patient with me. I have my flaws, but I try to do a good job of putting up with everyone elses. :] Your friend.
