I placed a short call with David from Vivid Solutions. After our
conversation and the information Michael posted to the list I realize
that it will be a very difficult task to enable OpenJUMP to work with
large spatial datasets.

Even if the RAM-Independent FaetureCollection or Feature
implementation is created and the core source code is modified, major
changes will still have to be made to OpenJUMP's rendering framework,
which currently leaves all features redered to the layer view panel in
memory.

I don't want to invest this type of serious time and effort into
OpenJUMP. I feel that it would be better spent on OpenJUMP-Ex, which
will attempt to solve these types of problems from the ground up.

So for the time being we will have to live with this limitation, as
frustrating as it is for some of us. :]

I would like to thank Michael and David for taking the time to answer
my questions. This has been a great learning experience, and will help
me when itis time to design the rendering framework for OpenJUMP-Ex.
