I'd probably do something like:

julia> x = Any["abc", "10"]
2-element Array{Any,1}:
 "abc"
 "10"

julia> for (i,v) in enumerate(x)
        parsed = tryparse(Int,v)
        x[i] = isnull(parsed) ? v : get(parsed)
       end

julia> x
2-element Array{Any,1}:
   "abc"
 10
