Since this is a common procedure when counting items in sequences, there is a specialized function (`merge`) and data structure (`Accumulator`) for it in the package `DataStructures`. Try a version of the following:
using DataStructures a = Dict(2 => 5, 3 => 7, 5 => 1) b = Dict(2 => 3, 3 => 5, 11 => 4) c = Dict(merge(counter(a),counter(b)) you can also look at the other Accumulator functions, which may be useful for what you are doing.
