Something like df[:a] = int(df[:a]) or df[:a] = float64(df[:a]) might work. It 
might be worth noting that Julia doesn’t have any of the types you mentioned: 
Factor is somewhat approximated by PooledDataArray, which isn’t a scalar type, 
but a container type; character is more like UTF8String and numeric is Float64.
