Thanks for your answers. Sorry I didn't reply earlier, been pretty
busy.
It turned out the problem was caused by an old version of Firebug
( http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/detail?id=928 ).
I am now using Firebug 1.3 on Firefox 3.5, where the bug is fixed.
