Ive used the tablesorter alot in my projects, and Ive had the need for this as well. I found a DataTables plugin which looks like it can do colspans, but I havent tried it. I actually looked after reading your post to see if it supported the colspans now, as earlier versions didnt and I see it looks like it does.
