Is jQuery working at all? I've noticed that WordPress can be very intrusive when you put javascript in posts. When I would first write a post with js embedded it would work, but the instant I edited it online the "helpful" editor textbox would reformat my js and break it.
If you want your gallery to be a permanent fixture (ie. On the side bar rather than just a single post) I would suggest you edit your theme directly. This should avoid any WordPress issues.
