MUCH simpler than that.

1) Put the image into the background of the 500px div
2) Capture / track the mouse position
3) Divide the x-position by 5
4) Use that to set the x-axis percentage of the background position

Just make sure you set the IE6 background image cache so that it doesn't flicker in that browser.
