okay, I've figured this out. the problem I was having was a combination of 1) ie's $(element).change() event doesn't fire until after the element looses focus (i use click() instead) and 2) refreshing ie doesn't always refresh the page, there's some funky caching going on so the changes I had made weren't showing up.
