Thanks for looking into this. Here is what you requested. I took your original demo page, removed demos 1 & 3 and modified Demo 2. I added collapsed: true and changed the persist to "location" in the demo.js file.
Folder 1 has been linked to index.html, Folder 2 has been linked to # and Folder 3 has been linked to folder3.html. As you will notice, when you click on the text for Folders 1 & 3 it will take you to the HTML page, but it will not open the sub folders. If you click on either side, but not the text, it will open the sub folders, but not take you to the page. My understanding is that when you click on the word, it will take you to the page AND open the sub folders.
