No, you're right. Form elements (input, select, textarea, etc) do have a 'form' attribute. I think it's even cross-browser. Your code WILL work with the new version (1.2.4) which will be (hopefully) released soon.
If you want to verify this will work, you can get it by doing a checkout: http://code.google.com/p/jqueryjs/source/checkout And building it yourself. $().attr() will be much more intuitive and reliably (I hope so) from now on.
