See Steve Krug's book called "Don't Make Me Think". The less learning a user
does, the better.
Right. The kind of visual hint the masked input plugins gives about the
expected value requires much less thinking then a small line of text
somewhere around the field saying "your credit card number must be of
format xxxx-xxx-xxxx-xxxxx". At least that is why I consider that plugin
very helpful.
