[jQuery] set attr in IE

[PragueExpat]

$(function(){
         $("#test").attr("maxlength",10);
});

Doesn't work on a text input field in IE. 

If I try:

$(function(){
   alert($("#test").attr("maxlength"));
   $("#test").attr("maxlength",10);
   alert($("#test").attr("maxlength"));
});

In IE my alerts are:

"2147483647"
"2147483647"

In Firefox and Opera:

"undefined"
"10"

Known problem?

JQuery is 1.1.2 and IE7
