unfortunately, I've put everything *back* in terms of the .24 driver, and I
can't duplicate the issue :(
I'm usually pretty good at maintaining my scientific controls, but I must
have affected something to cause this to be ok now..?

going to try to set up an isolated environment to try this again; I'll get
