To work around this, if I set _batch.size_ and _max.request.size_ to be just 
enough to accomodate 1 "record" i.e. the JSON message bytes received from my 
upstream webservice, will it have the effect of having just 1 message being 
part of a single batch ?

This way, hopefully, the Producer API will ensure that the first request (which 
is now the ONLY one part of the first batch), will be continually retried 
before other requests (which are in their own individual batches) can be 
retried ?

These are all options in addition to setting enable.idempotence = true.
