Review Comment:
   I understand what you mean. My point was that some users may have built 
custom `log4j.properties` files and run clusters with those, and we want that 
to continue working. For the new log4j2 files, then yes it makes sense to 
evaluate the different formats.
   
   Thanks for opening a thread, it's very useful to get input from an Apache 
Logging PMC member to help us make decisions.
