Review Comment:
   1. You got it right. Even though the async request failed and won't be 
retried the timer is reset when it completes. It was done in the [legacy 
coordinator](https://github.com/apache/kafka/blob/137fc18713952450169055dc55f5e3d2ab2ca4de/clients/src/main/java/org/apache/kafka/clients/consumer/internals/ConsumerCoordinator.java#L1192)
 so just keeping the behaviour, that seems sensible. 
   2. We were missing it actually. I just added it. Basically whenever a commit 
request fails with a retriable, it should throw the RetriableCommitException. 
Added with test (will add some more shortly), basically sorting out that 
actually the behaviour is diff for sync and async
