I've seen reports of that type of failure when the agent JDK was outdated or the agent.jar file was outdated. I have the "Version Node Monitors" plugin <https://plugins.jenkins.io/versioncolumn/> installed on my Jenkins instance so that I can see the agent remoting versions and agent JVM versions that are connected to my controller.
