I have taken a look into the code of ReverseBuildTrigger where the 
NullPointerException happens:
111 boolean downstreamVisible = jenkins.getItemByFullName(job.getFullName()) 
== job;

But still no closer to the solution...

It looks like the problem lies with authentication.
