For anyone watching, this was caused by a plugin.  Which one, though, I 
have not been able to determine.  But turning them all off fixed the 
problem, and then I've been incrementally turning them back on.

Also, the ajax calls I posted about later are apparently normal.  So no 
smoking gun there.
