This surfaced when I upgraded from an old Jenkins version (?) to 1.491. It manifested as not only build history disappearing for jobs, but also issues with the build pipeline plugin "losing" random build pipelines. I first thought that early jobs weren't kicking off later jobs, but it might simply have been that they weren't showing up as having started in the pipeline view.
I mitigated the problems for now by disabling the disk-usage plugin.
