Here's an update: I checked the Jenkins website very early this morning, 
and a release candidate had appeared. I installed it and tested it, and 
found that the bug seems to have been mostly fixed! See my notes in JIRA 
(issue 14474) for details if you're interested. There is still a problem 
with some jobs, but I can work round that. So I am now able to move to 
the latest release of Jenkins. Such a relief!
