I tried this on a fresh installation of Ubuntu 14.04 and it works correctly. However it fails on my version what was upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04 then to 13.10 then to 14.04 and it upgraded Jenkins on the way. I did check and both instances are now at 1.583. I had a look at /etc/init.d/jenkins and /etc/default/jenkins and both instances look identical.
All this is very weird, but it makes me thing that running apt-get purge on the old instance and reinstalling should solve the issue even though uninstall + install did not do it. I don't want however to loose all my configurations so I need to do a suitable backup before I try.
