Yes, there should be gain from using --single-branch even when using --reference and it depends on the project history. If there are many heavy-weight branches and the project have long history - then --single-branch option could speed up project cloning significantly. --reference can just minimize network load on loading objects as I understand.

I cloned git module source code and took a look at it. My estimate for completing this task (even w/o tests) is many hours, because I'm not familiar with Java and the coding style seems pretty odd for me. That's why I decided to create a task. For some who is familiar with Java and with git module code it could took max few hours (10 minutes of coding, and the rest for debugging, writing tests etc.)
