If it's omitted, different compilers will generate one in an unspecified (and thus not necessarily compatible) manner. There are a number of issues involving cases where jenkins code changed which resulted in bugs. This happens throughout the java ecosystem. OpenGrok hit it: https://github.com/oracle/opengrok/issues/192 and then added a check to avoid hitting it in the future. This issue is to track adding serialVersionUID for all existing classes in core. Someone could also use this ticket to add a check to catch future offenders.
