As an example, if you clone the Mozilla Gecko repo, it's so large that the operation takes a considerable amount of time. The UI doesn't appropriately show you that you have a clone in progress. The best solution to all of these sorts of problems is to quickly direct the user to the Activities page, and add enough information that the activities page will show a Branch Calculating sort of state - e.g. "Jenkins is cloning the repository and searching for branches".
