I guess the document [1] mentioned above is quite old and now obsolete; the junit.org web site contains a lot of cruft. JUnit 4 does not treat test failures and errors distinctly.
Nonetheless distinguishing VM crashes from Java-generated exceptions/errors is potentially useful.
