Just chiming in here as well: AFAIK the default Java behavior is to not 
switch protocols during redirects to avoid security issues - even for HTTP 
to HTTPS switches -, as pointed out in 
https://issues.jenkins.io/browse/JENKINS-73760?focusedId=449264&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-449264
