Further progress. After the reload, using the JDE only .emacs, I can
now come up & load a .java file, and I'm in JDE. I don't get the error
messages I got on the test machine.

Using my regular .emacs, I have a problem with speedbar. I put the JDE
stuff toward the end of my .emacs. I conjecture that I am picking up
the version of speedbar that comes with emacs, not the one in
CEDET. So I should probably put the JDE stuff, or at least the
pathology, early in my .emacs. I'll play with that.
