changing MultiTermRewriteMethod fixed all previous incompatibility issue. After setting this: myQueryParser.setMultiTermRewriteMethod(MultiTermQuery.SCORING_BOOLEAN_QUERY_REWRITE);
highlighter get compatible with rewrite, query.rewrite().toString() works as before and scoring works fine for wildcard queries (as before).
