Well, I'm glad to see that it's not just me<G>. What I'd tentatively thought about was using a TopDocs (search(Query, Filter, Num) form) to get me the top Num documents (by relevance), then doing the "bucketing" and sorting myself at that point. But your suggestion made me look at FieldSortedHitQueue and it looks like a lot less work than I was going to do.
It seems like I can use a TopDocs to avoid the HitCollector step you're thinking about, on the theory that it would be less for me to mess up. Once I have the TopDocs, I can "bucketize" the scores and use the FieldSortedHitQueue as you suggest. The ugly part I wanted to avoid was having a bunch of logic to handle when I wanted to do this and when I wanted to sort by criteria other than relevance. Perhaps I can get a bit clever and make that part pretty if I think about for a bit in the morning, all this OO stuff must be good for *something* in this situation.... Here's a solution that I'm going to try: Use a HitCollector with a PriorityQueue to sort all hits by raw Lucene score, ignoring the secondary sort field. After the search, re-sort just the hits from the queue above (500 in your case) with a FieldSortedHitQueue that sorts on score, then the secondary field (title in your case), but 'normalize' the score to your 'user visible' scores before re-sorting.
