Thanks for pointing out the patch. It will do exactly what I need.

I resorted to adding the DTD declarations for DocBook 5 into the target
documents to work around this limitation. It is a little ugly, but it
works.

There you can find a patch that you can apply to get XInclude shorthand
pointers working based on the xml:id values. As Michael commented on the
bug that is not a full xml:id support but it makes the shorthand
pointers working.. so I hope that helps you.
