Just had the same problem running the MovieLensALS example in Scala with a 
fresh install of spark 2.1.0  on Mac

It fails with numIterations 20 reducing the numIterations to 10 works perfectly.

No need to reopen the ticket, just commented to inform that the same issue 
happens with the Scala example.
