If you have time/ability/interest, you might experimentally pursue this in a 
fork of Solr to see if you can embed Solr (your fork) and yet not depend on 
Jetty HttpClient.  I'd be *very* interested in hearing how such an experiment 
went, as it aligns with a nice-to-have goal where I work.
