Thank you for filing this bug report, and even better, attaching a patch file!  
 I am going to convert this to a PR so we can look at it.  

 

The first change seems to make total sense, however i am less clear on the 
second change.  I will try and elaborate in the PR.

 

We will have a 9.7.1 very soon.
