I'm not very familiar with snapshots TBH but I think I get what you are saying. 
 It's too bad we don't have general index metadata then; not necessarily on a 
commit.  I vaguely recall some Solr generated index properties file 
somewhere... dunno if that would "count" or could be expanded to be a little 
more general.
