Looking at this again. I think we need an umbrella "Modularize SolrJ" Jira and 
start working on one piece at a time.

Until then, is it possible to mark Netty as an "optional" dependency in Gradle 
for 9.0? Perhaps that will make apps out there that do not explicitly need it a 
bit slimmer. Some of them probably excludes some of this in their POM already 
though.
