Thanks Julian.  I tried removing both and tests don't pass; both lead to – 
ClassNotFoundException.  I won't pursue this further.  I'm most surprised by 
the ESRI dependency because ST_Distance would take some integration with Solr 
for it (I think) and none has been done.  I'll share a snippet of the
