The referenced page of [apache explicitly mentions](https://www.apache.org/info/verification.html) the usage of `shasum/md5sum/certUtil` tool which I have mentioned as well in [MNG-6784](https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MNG-6784). The format from my point of view is a consequence by using the appropriate tools... if not otherwise explicitly mentioned I would assume that the format is the one which can be consumed by the given tools.
