Evgeny Stanilovsky created IGNITE-24405:
-------------------------------------------

             Summary: Change Partition Count
                 Key: IGNITE-24405
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IGNITE-24405
             Project: Ignite
          Issue Type: Epic
          Components: sql
    Affects Versions: 3.0
            Reporter: Evgeny Stanilovsky

Data partitioning is a method of subdividing large sets of data into smaller
chunks and distributing them between all server nodes in a balanced manner. All
rows stored in the grid are targeted with a concrete partition. The set of
partitions is distributed between the server nodes. Partitioning boosts
performance by distributing both read and write operations, but as time passes,
cluster can grow (increasing physical nodes) while the number of partitions
still remains the same and as a consequence performance boost will degrade,
including cases when physical node hosts no one partition at all. Thus changing
the number of partitions (increasing|decreasing) API is important here.
