Hui Huang commented on HIVE-20441: ---------------------------------- Good Question![~dengzh] {quote} 1.the registerToSessionRegistry method has registered the function into the session cache, why should called again by addFunction(functionName, function) , this may override the udf registered recently, what if the same query executed again in the same session? check newFunction != null && isNative before add function? 2.the registerToSession set to true and if the newFunction returned is null, this will goes on to next addFunction(functionName, function);. In this case, does it make any sense? in which case should we do like this? {quote} Here is my understanding(may be wrong): 1. Hive has two type of Registry: system level and session level. The registerPermanentFunction function is only called by system level registry and registerToSessionRegistry function will add this function to session level registry, and cache will not override. You can read the code about getFunctionInfo in FunctionRegistry.java to get more information. 2. If the registerToSession set to true and if the newFunction returned is null, this will not goes on to next addFunction, just return null after version 1.2.1 hive, but it does in version 1.2.1 hive. So we do not need worry about that in the latest code. thanks > NPE in ExprNodeGenericFuncDesc when hive.allow.udf.load.on.demand is set to > true >
