Thank you [~eshcar] for digging in on my question. Sounds like we can simplify
here if we get parallelism in here (I'm not sure why it is not parallel already
-- it may just be cruft) and if we do the simplification, then we might be able
to do w/o the merge. Suggest we open new perf issue to dig in on why NOT
parallel but meantime, keep this issue moving forward but now BASIC includes
merge.
