Maybe there's something in your Nginx config that would be informative?
I think it's time to configure your proxy to dump requests to a file so that
the difference might be visible. My only other guess would be SSL/TLS version
issues, but I wouldn't expect that to produce a 403; I'd expect no response at
all due to total connection failure.
