If an authentication attempt is rejected with an HTTP 400, the login screen
renders that error within a red/pink error notification at the top of the page
and allows the user to reattempt authentication. However, if there _is_ no
login screen (because the authentication attempt is not interactive), then
there is no UI component present to show the error that occurred and the user
sees nothing but a blank page.
