@tweise on the matter of merge process for this change: I believe there wasn't any prior announcement for this, but technically now that `release-1.17` branch is cut, and the fact that we've agreed that 1.17 will be the last release where the Flink Kafka Connector will exist in an `apache/flink` core release, we should actually be good now to remove the Flink Kafka connector code from `apache/flink:master`, and going forward the official process would be: 1. Open changes against `apache/flink-connector-kafka:main` 2. If necessary, backport to previous release branches of `apache/flink-connector-kafka` 3. While Flink 1.16 and 1.17 is still supported, if appropriate, backport changes to `apache/flink:release-1.16` and `apache/flink:release-1.17` as well. Merging this PR to `apache/flink:master` now could complicate things a bit with the externalization effort - because technically we can remove the Kafka connector code in `apache/flink:master` any time now.
