I can see the merits of both checkpointing approaches but Stephan is right
in the sense that allowing semi-async snapshots with dynamic scaling would need
a completely new implementation and would probably add considerable overhead.
I agree that we should probably remove it for the time being and maybe
later we can reintroduce it if there is an efficient implementation with
scaling in mind.
